In 1999, Ghana adopted the Community-based Health Planning and Service (CHPS) policy to enhance access to primary health care (PHC). However, after over two decades of implementation, significant portions of the population, particularly in rural areas, still
lack access to basic healthcare services. In Ghana, CHPS operates alongside other health equity policies such as the pro-poor national health insurance program. Despite these efforts, access to healthcare remains disproportionately low relative to their needs.
Rural communities face numerous barriers, including poor transportation networks, long distances to health facilities, inadequate healthcare professionals, and even unethical practices like intimidation by healthcare providers.
